Fourteen utterly distinct dancers from Mali, Benin, Nigeria and Senegal come together for Heddy Maalem's interpretation of The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps). Maalem's Rite, straightforward and without artifice, is placed in urban Africa and inspired by the choreographer's time in Lagos, Nigeria, a city of 12 million people. Highly dynamic dance sequences and overwhelming group scenes are intertwined with intense scenes of silence and film projections exemplifying the unpredictability of human emotion - a provocative contrast to the music. Heddy Maalem was born in Algeria. His extensive training in boxing and aikido continue to influence his choreography, which is marked by precision, sparse vocabulary and clarity.
