"For the first time ever at PPAC, the star of this year's Annual Gala will be the most honored female country performer of all time, Dolly Parton," said Singleton. "We are so fortunate to have this legendary entertainer helping us celebrate the theatre's 80th anniversary."
Dolly Parton was born into poverty, the fourth of twelve children, in a one-room cabin in the backwoods of Tennessee. Despite her poor surroundings, little Dolly found hope in song, began composing her own tunes and even started performing on local Tenessee radio stations at the tender age of 11. After moving to Nashville in 1964, Dolly caught the eye of Porter Wagoner, who immediately began to feature her on his syndicated television show.
It was during her run with Wagoner that Dolly came into her own as a songwriter, composing and performing songs such as "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," and what would be her biggest hit, "I Will Always Love You." To date, Dolly has produced 25 number one songs on the Billboard chart, 41 top ten country albums, and 110 career charted singles. Beyond her music, Dolly has appeared such films as THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, and 9 to 5, for which she received nomination for both an acting Golden Globe and a Best Original Song Oscar for the title song. Dolly is currently adapting 9 to 5 into a Broadway show, opening at the Marquis Theatre in April 2009. In addition to her musical and acting talents, Dolly is also a devoted philanthropist and humanitarian; her Dollywood Foundation funds the "Imagination Library" charity that spans 41 states, and provides a book per month to a child from birth until they enter kindergarten. "Dollywood," the theme park that she opened in 1986 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, brings an average 2.5 million visitors a year to the Smoky Mountains, where she was born. With a 40+ year career of singing, writing, acting, and giving, PPAC is pleased to present DOLLY PARTON in her PPAC debut as our special guest at this year's Annual Gala.
The black-tie preferred post-performance reception will include live music and hors d'oeuvres and dessert stations from some of the finest restaurants in Rhode Island, amid the spectacular atmosphere of the beautifully restored Grand Lobby.
